The Good Life?

Life was good for Sarah.  She had a family, a home, an education, and great friends.  Yet, she felt empty.  She was always striving for more.  She didn’t want more success or stuff; they just gave her a temporary high that quickly faded.  What she really wanted was more life.  She wanted to get off the treadmill and start truly living every moment.

Sarah was suffering from the “the good life.”  We’ve been conditioned to pursue the American dream and find ourselves disappointed when it doesn’t deliver.

So how can we turn a good life into a great one?  The answer is God.  But how do we move from good to God?  If you look at the two words, there is an obvious difference – the letter O.

Let’s look at some O’s in life that interfere with experiencing God’s best:

  • uh-Oh’s – Worry is pervasive and destructive.  Instead, focus on the positive and trust that God has it under control.
  • Oh-no’s – We dwell on regrets and past mistakes even when God forgives us. He’s forgotten our past, so let’s not keep reminding Him.
  • Obligations – Don’t be bound by busyness.  Jesus tells Martha (who was focused on the magnitude of work to be done) that her sister Mary had chosen the better thing of spending time with Him.
  • Other gods – Let’s not elevate our stuff to a place of higher value than God.  Loosen the grip and share with others the blessings He’s given us.
  • Orthodoxy – Beware of religion.  God is more interested in a relationship with us than any set of codes and rituals.
  • Ourselves – Investing in others directs our focus away from our problems and we then experience joy more fully.

Are you ready to lighten the load and ditch some O’s in life?
