Sweet Whispers
Shortly after my son turned two years old, he learned to whisper. He would lean close to my ear and whisper “love you” or “mama” or sometimes just “truck”. It didn’t seem to matter to me what the message was, his voice was so tender and sweet I would melt.
But, in order for me to engage in those precious moments with him, a couple of things had to happen.
- I had to be close to him.
- I had to be attentive and still.
As I reflected on those times, I thought of my relationship with God and imagined a similar image of Him whispering to me. Oftentimes in Scripture, God’s voice is portrayed in a loud and thunderous manner. However, in 1 Kings He appears to Elijah in a quiet moment.
The LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.”
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. (1 Kings 19:11-13)
Where are we in our walk with the Lord? Are we close enough to hear His guiding voice? Are we still enough to hear His whispers of love and encouragement?
My prayer for us is that we won’t let the noise of the world drown out the sweet whispers of our heavenly Father. That’ll we seek a closeness with Him that hushes the busyness around us and draws us into His tender care.
