Simple Pleasures

After several snow storms, my husband decided I needed a treat.  So, he purchased a voucher for me to take my minivan to the automatic car wash.  Although his act of kindness may have been driven by his obsessive desire to have our cars cleaned, it indeed turned out to be a true gift.

I rarely go through a car wash.  So rarely, that it’s probably been about four years since my last visit. My car visits more frequently than I do, but only because my husband tends to this particular detail  for me.

Apparently, our son loves the car wash and had recently been asking to go.  Now, armed with my voucher, I decided I’d surprise the kids with a little fun after picking him up from preschool.  My daughters were with me as well and all were excited.

We had to wait for what seemed like an eternity while the car in front of us had the deluxe wash.  And while we waited, we all sat mesmerized by the mechanics of the machine ahead.  We were intrigued as we patiently observed each step in the process – the pretreatment, rinse, blue bubbly treatment, more rinsing, and drying.

Then, finally, it was our turn!  The anticipation had built until we all let out a giggle as the first spray began.  And for the next five minutes or so (we, too, were having the deluxe wash) we laughed and watched and craned our necks to follow each movement of the automated machine around us.

My joy was heighted by watching the excitement of my kids.  Something so simple, yet fascinating.  The laughter and giggles floated through the car. As I sat there watching and taking it all in, I was keenly aware that these moments in life are important.  If I could freeze such moments, I would.  Instead, I’m reminded that I need to slow down and enjoy the simple things.  I need to be present in the moment and look to celebrate even the routine things.

Who would have thought that a few minutes in the car wash would have brought me such joy?

I challenge you to slow down, look around, and enjoy whatever the day brings.  And should you find yourself in a car wash, be sure to laugh and let it wash your cares away.

This is the day which the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.  Psalm 118:24
