Seek and Find

In an effort to make the prospect of cleaning fun, I announced to my children that we were going on a scavenger hunt.  Their job was to look for anything downstairs that belonged to them and take it back to their rooms.  As I walked downstairs, I was surprised at what I saw – two little bottoms sticking up in the air.   Their heads were under the living room sofa as they searched the darkness beneath for any hidden belongings.  In theory, it wasn’t a bad thought.  However, the reality was that they stepped over two pairs of shoes, a tote bag, a book, and some toy cars to go searching under the sofa.  They’d overlooked the obvious items in search of something hiding elsewhere.

How often do we do the same thing?  We’re sad or lonely so we find food to eat instead seeking God as our comfort.  We engage in busyness so we won’t have to tend to our feelings of insecurity.  We feel inadequate so we try to prove our worth by impressing others.  We spend a great deal of time looking in all the wrong places.  God is the answer to all our needs – physically, spiritually and emotionally.  We will never find fulfillment in worldly things.  They may please us for a short time, but God is the only one who truly satisfies all our needs.   He’s waiting for us to seek Him and we’ll find Him in plain view when we do.

But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul. Deuteronomy 4:29
