5 Easy steps to finding your purpose

At some point, you’ll likely find yourself questioning your purpose in life.  But don’t despair.  Here are five things to consider as you search for meaning.

  1. Assess your gifts and talents – Consider your strengths and skill sets.  If you can’t instantly think of any reflect on previous stages in your life.  Begin with childhood.  Were there things that teachers commented on as your strengths.  Continue through each stage of life, making notes about your memories and observations.
  2. What do you enjoy?  Think about those things that ignite a passion in you – maybe it’s solving problems, helping others, or creating something.  Pay attention to those things that allow you to escape the dimension of time when you’re engaged in the activity.
  3. Find the intersection – Look for ways you can help others where items 1 and 2 intersect.   Identifying the intersection is important, but adding the element of helping others is equally so.  Here’s a personal example of my assessment to give you an idea.  I have always been able to organize information and I enjoy teaching, writing, and health.  When I use my writing to help teach others in some way, I find that satisfying spot in life that leaves me with a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment.
  4. Look for the obvious.  Our purpose in life can change, depending on the season.  Sometimes our primary purpose is a function of our place in life such as parenting.  If you are parenting children or caring for elderly parents on a daily basis, be careful not to neglect your other gifts and talents.  Perhaps you can exercise them through hobbies and entertainment, but be sure to find an outlet.
  5. Seek God.  We were all created to worship.  When we’re praising God, we’ll experience a satisfaction beyond explanation.  Ultimately, our purpose comes from Him – He gives us our talents, skills, and interests.  When we use them to serve Him, we’ll be a blessing to others and be filled with His peace and contentment.
